meenakshi amman temple or meenakshi sundaraswrar temple is a famous hindu temple situated in the temple city of madurai, tamilnadu state, india. the temple is dedicated to lord siva and goddess paravathi. it has about 2500 years old.the main attraction of this temple is 14 huge gopurams, tow of them are golden gopurams.these are well sculptured and painted beautifully.

according to hindu belief the lord siva married meenakshi(variation of parvathi).parvathi had born earlier in the earth as a daughter of malayadwaraja pandya, ruler of maduri.the marriage between sivasundar(lord siva) and meenakshi was a huge event in madurai.

the major festival here is meenakshi thirukalayanam. it is celebrated during april .ther thiruvizhah and thoppa thiruvizhah are also celebrated .other hindu festivals like sivarathri, navarathri, aadi, thai etc are also celebrated.
