Periyar is a natural reserve in kerala , in south India. Periyar is a part of idukki district located at the border of kerala and tamilnadu . this wild life sanctuary covers and area of 777 sq km. s50 sq km are protected as core zone , where no human interference is allowed. This park is also known by the name thekkady. It is about 4 km away from kumily and 120 km from kochi. Climate in periyar ranged between 15 degree celcius during winter and 30 degree celcius during summer seasons. The annual precipitation varies between 2000 and 3000mm. about 70 % of precipitation occurs during monsoon season, lies between june to September. The remaining 20 % occurs during northeastmonsoon season lies between October and December. Periyar is lies in between the cardamom hills. It is about 1700 m above sea level. The highest peak in periyar known as kottamali at an altitude of 2019 m. the periyar lake covers an area of 26 sq km., where the mullaperiyar dam constructed in 1895.
Periyar is a beautiful biosphere reserves in kerala. now periyar is well known for ecotourism projects. This sanctuary is divided into three zones, these are core zone, buffer zone .in core zone the human interference is not allowed. So these areas are not used for tourism purposes. The buffer zone in periyar covers an area of 430 sq km. these area can be used for tourism projects. The major attraction in periyar is periyar lake or thekkady lake. The boating through this lake is a memorable event in your life. A well known temple sabarimala is located in the buffer zone of periyar sanctuary.about 4 million hindu pilgrims are visiting sabarimal every year. One of the draw back of periyar sanctuary is lack of facilities. This sanctuary required much more maintenance to accommodate the increasing number of tourists.
Periyar wild life sanctuary located in idukki district in kerala. the sanctuary have a rich varities of flora and fauna. the 72 % of the wildlife sanctuary are evergreen rain forest. These forest have evergreen tropical plants like vateria indica, hopea, cullenia artocarpus hirsutus ,bishofia javanica etc are seen. These plants can attain a height of 50 to 60 meters. About 16 % of periyar wildlife sanctuary covered with damp leaves forest. The famous industry trees namely eucalyptus are covered in 7 % of area. Grass lands are covered with 2 % of area. The remaining 3 % covered by the thekkady lake, also known as periyar lake. Periyar have 2000 different kinds of flowering plants, three kinds of seed plants and 170 species of ferns.in flowering plants 170 families are sweet grasses and 154 are including under fabaceae. Here you can see 140 different varities of orchids. A wide variety of medicinal plants are also seen. Periyar have 60 different kinds of mammals. By the census of government of India, the periyar reserve have 25 tigers. The elephant numbers varies between 900 to 1000. the wildlife includes gaur, sambar, barking deer, mouse, dholes etc are also can see. 300 different bird species are flying through this reserve. About 45 varities of reptiles including ,darters,cormorants, malabr hornbill etc.
Peiyar biosphere reserves is an excellent example of biodiversity in kerala. it covers and are of 777 sq km. periyar is one of the best tiger reserves in India . the location can be specified by this manner, longitude 76 degree, latitude 9 degree. The main rock formation seen here are granite and gneisses. The soil consists of large amount of quartz which is formed from crystalline rock. The temperature ranges from 15 degree celcius during winter and and rise up to 30 degree celcius during summer season. The annual rain fall ranges from 2000 mm to 3000mm. the monsoon season ranges from October to December. A premonsoon season in april. The main river flowing through periyar is pamba.
