Edakkal caves-edakkal caves famous tour place in wayanadu

Edakkal cave is one of the important tourist destination in wayanadu.. the prehistoric rock etchings seen on the walls of these caves made a specials attention of archeologists and historians . the literal meaning of edakkal is ‘a stone in between’. The inside of this cave is split into two levels. The lower chamber have 18 feet long and 12 feet wide and 10 feet height. sunlight enters into the cave through a big gap located  right handed corner of the roof .The legend says that the cave were formed by arrows sent by lave and kusha, sri rama’s sons.The colonial discovery of edakkal caves by Fred fawcest a police officer in the malaber district. He found that the site is a habitat of Neolithic.

Wayanad district is located in kerala , south India. A tour to wayanad is a unique experience in your life. The name of wayanadu derived from a Malayalam word vaylinnadu. Which means land of fields.  The present wayanad is formed from the portions of kannur and kozhikode on November 1 st in 1980. the main tourism earning in kerala occurs through wayanad. The main attractions here are

Banasura dam

It is the largest dam in India. It is about 20 km away from kalpetta.

The headquarters of wayanad is located at kalpetta. A famous jain temple can be seen here.

Edakkal caves

Edakkal caves are located at ambalavayal . this is huge rock formation. Here you can see prehistoric carvings on the rock wall.

Ananthananthaswami temple

Ananathanathaswami temple is located at puiyarmala. This is a beautiful jain temple . it is dedicated to lord ananthaswami. The nearest airport is karippoor international airport at kozhikodu, and railway station alos at kozhikodu.

Wayanad is a district with beautiful thick forest. The word meaning of wayanad is paddy fields. Wayanad is the district with highest tribal population in kerala. wayanad is famous for its climate , coffee and tea plantations, spice plantations etc. the district covers an area of 2132 sq km . the main talukes in wayanad are sultan batheri, vythiri, mananthavadi etc . one and only muncipalitiy in wayanad is kalpetta.
